Indiana University Indianapolis (IUI)

Ellie Ash is a postdoctoral researcher in the sociology of religion at Indiana University Indianapolis (IUI). Her research focuses on lived religion in the United States, and she is particularly interested in religious and cultural liberalism, religious authority, and how culture works. She is currently working on a book titled Halakhic Humanism: Authority and Culture in a Liberal Observant Jewish Community, which explores how traditionally observant, socially liberal practitioners draw on different sources of authority and cultural influence as they bring together halakha(Jewish ritual law) and liberal humanistic values. At IUI, she is contributing to a project about Episcopalian parents’ attitudes to religious parenting. Ellie holds a master’s degree in Social Science from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Religious Studies from Boston University.
